Building an understanding

What makes an architect a valuable contributor in making the world a better place for living and working? Now the term, as all know, Architectural design is a multidisciplinary subject of humane and economic values that are implemented to make a better and more cohesive environment. To the makers of regenerative spaces and sustainable living, the economy plays a vital role in the incorporation of such activities. Augmentation of such spaces requires calculative and survey-based policies that focus on generating more fiscal growth and parallelly focusing on all layers of society. Understanding can be built through the breakthrough collection a movie makes at its box office. Making a film requires various entities– Producer, Director, Screenwriter, Camera and Light Department, Art Department and Post – Production that work based on the economy it is going to generate. A chain of synchronized elements along with the economic state it holds bearing in mind all the phases of film.

Knowing the Incentives

Economic policies introduced by the government should be the key drivers of architectural designs. Any project always focuses on major aspects of producing a cost-efficient and sustainable icon of stature. To ease the process the government established certain initiatives and let the architects do the designing and review procedure. The interconnectivity between economy and architectural designs jots the prominent figure of all the spaces i.e., community. Most important is the generation, production, and retrenchment of financial drivers for feasible and better architectural design spaces. Many theories refer to creating a utopia through Architectural design in consideration of the Financial System of that space. A fine example of such an aspect is the radiant city theory by architect Le Corbusier stating the development of vertical spaces and leaving spaces for more breathable areas to create more interaction between people and nature. It also includes the implementation of underground transportation to increase connectivity and reduce traffic and motility. The theory ensured that the radial design did not interfere with the functional spaces. The role of the economy would be the creation of cost-efficient architectural design.

The government has made policies to justify the need and focus on generating more economy, affordability, and sustainable living. Names of such policies are PMAY (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna), RERA (Real Estate Regulation and Development), PMGSY (Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna), AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transportation), HRIDAY (Heritage City Development), PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. The following policies anchor the creation of elemental architectural design that inhibits a cohesive and cost-effective environment. One such fine example of affordable residences is Aranya Housing by Ar B.V. Doshi.

Chiefly these policies are meant to improve and introduce facilities for feasible transportation, affordable housing, and adapt to renewable energy sources. Swachh Bharat Mission aims to create architectural designs that are clean and well-maintained in urban areas, including public parks and recreational spaces. Government policies are designed for efficiently planned and functional spaces including the cohesive built environment among the designers, planners, civil engineers, labourers, contractors and all the workforce in this field.

The primal element within an architectural design is derived from its financial value. The higher the land price the more diversion from the development, urban sprawl, the increased construction cost, and the generation of waste at a higher amount. The interlinked subjects bring all the sustainable lenses for area-wise growth. Starting through a breakthrough in the reduction in the dependability of imported building materials instead of locally available materials- enhancement of the vernacular style of architectural design. Rightly said by Ar Francis Kere,” If we learn to build with local materials, we have a future.”

The conscience of an architect should depict cooperation with the following policies and norms established by the Government authorities. Certainly, the bifurcation or the hierarchical layers of professions in architecture should respect and follow the guidelines established. Though it might seem a long procedure to lay the foundation on, the incentives always positively impact the community. For example, installation of energy-efficient techniques seems to cost much but the latter can help in the fruitful reduction of higher energy consumption. Architectural design should not constrain itself to addressing the economic classes only!!

Ever wonder why the disaster-affected areas always post forums for funding? As there are no pre-flourished funds neither is the planning done to resolve the aftermath. Natural Disasters are suddenly caused leading to life and property loss. Disaster-prone areas must adhere to the pre-disaster mitigation policies i.e., use of materials that are resistant to fire, water etc. and architectural design must create resilient structures. Pre-saved funds and financial aid can help in navigating the rescue operation by creating spaces for post-disaster-affected areas.
