Amdavad ni Gufa is a unique and iconic architectural structure in Ahmedabad, India that serves as an excellent example of the intersection between architecture and journalism. Designed by renowned architect, artist, and academician BV Doshi, Amdavad ni Gufa was built in collaboration with the legendary Indian artist MF Husain.

The structure is designed to resemble a cave, with curving walls and a ceiling made of ferrocement shells. The structure’s interior is a labyrinthine space that serves as an exhibition space for contemporary art exhibitions.

What makes Amdavad ni Gufa a compelling example of the intersection between architecture and journalism is the role architectural journalism played in bringing attention to the structure.

When the structure was completed in 1994, it was largely unknown outside of Ahmedabad. However, due to its extensive coverage in architectural publications and journals, Amdavad ni Gufa quickly gained national and international recognition as an innovative and groundbreaking work of architecture.]

Research in Architecture

Research indicates a strong link between writing and architecture and design. While these two fields may seem vastly different, many underlying similarities connect them.

At its core, both writing and architecture and design involve the creation of narratives. In architecture and design, creating narratives involves conceptualising stories brought to life by designing structures and spaces. Similarly, in writing, narratives are created through words and phrases that evoke emotions and images in the reader’s mind. Writing, architecture, and design require the ability to tell a compelling story that captures the imagination and engages the senses.

In addition to creating narratives, writing, architecture, and design involve structures and aesthetics. In architecture and design, structures refer to the physical components of a building or space. In contrast, aesthetics refers to the visual and sensory elements that make a space appealing and functional.

The art and craft of writing, through a lonely process, when performed for the discipline of architectural design, becomes a stimulating one that articulates design and its impressions, drives architectural discourses, and educates and builds opinions in academia, practice, media, and society.

Architecture universities are critical in promoting and encouraging architecture writing and journalism. Through coursework, research, and publications, these institutions help to develop a culture of critical inquiry and reflection within the field of architecture, which is essential for the advancement of the profession.
