The regulator has not been able to catch up with the advancements. The EU AI Act is currently in progress, following its phased process of enforcement. Most nations are either developing their policies or just waiting for others to set the examples and follow suit.

The gap explains the emergence of this field as one of the most rapidly expanding categories of professionals in the tech industry. The appearance of various certifications IAPP’s AIGP, ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer, ITIL’s AI Governance module, and many more in response to just one very practical question: nobody’s, then who, governs AI practices within the company if no one regulates it?

What Does an AI Governance Certification Actually Prepare You For?

Three overlapping functions. Risk assessment, which involves assessing AI systems pre- and post-deployment and includes things like bias testing, data quality testing, and failure mode analysis. Documentation of compliance, which involves creating impact assessments, model cards, and decision logs that regulatory agencies and auditors are increasingly requiring. Which AI Governance Certifications Matter Most Right Now?

IAPP AIGP

The Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional designation is offered by the International Association of Privacy Professionals. The IAPP introduced it in April 2024. With it, IAPP brought its reputation as professionals and data protection communities to the table. AIGP certification demonstrates proficiency of a professional in responsible design, implementation, and oversight of AI solutions. The exam covers four domains: AI foundations, regulatory and framework alignment including the EU AI Act and NIST AI RMF, AI development governance, and post-deployment oversight. Its questions, no formal prerequisites. It’s the generalist credential.

PeopleCert ITIL AI Governance

ITIL wasn’t built as an AI management framework. It’s the long-standing standard for IT service management. ITIL Version 5, launched in February 2026, introduced a dedicated AI oversight qualification built around two core models: the AI Capability Model and the AI Governance Improvement Model. This is a framework which operationalizes this oversight within the structure of service management processes, which are implemented by IT teams; therefore, it is useful for service managers, product owners, and operations managers.

PECB ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer

ISO/IEC 42001 is the first international standard for AI management systems. Lead Implementer training certifies individuals in how to develop and implement one within their organizations. This training, which is offered by accredited providers like PECB, involves the initiation, implementation, monitoring, and continual improvement of an AI management system before the certification audit is carried out. The requirements, costs, and mode of training differ from one provider to another. While AIGP is the credential that represents a generalist, Lead Implementer is the credential for a specialist who develops and manages the governance system.

AIGPC from CertiProf

The AI Governance Professional Certification is a relatively new, short-form certification offered by CertiProf, which is closely linked to ISO/IEC 42001. The exam consists of 40 multiple-choice questions and lasts for 60 minutes, and you need to score 80% in order to pass it. It is targeted at professionals seeking a quick and reliable certification based on standards. It can be seen as a stepping stone prior to getting something bigger or cheaper than AIGP.

How To Prepare for an AI Governance Certification Exam?

First of all, refer to the Body of Knowledge and exam blueprint provided by the IAPP; they are available online at no cost, and they will give you the exact table of contents of the exam. In the meantime, the answer to who gets to make AI’s rules is a mixed one. A blend of standards bodies, professional associations, and individual professionals who chose to formalize their practices before anyone forced them to. That’s an unusual way. It’s an oversight system that has shape. It’s also, for now, the one we’ve got.
