Designing a home isn’t just about walls and furniture—it’s about crafting a sanctuary where every corner tells a tale, every room reflects a dream, and every detail embodies the unique personalities of those who call it home. For Farah Agarwal, founder of Chestnut Storeys, this philosophy was at the heart of her approach to the Riverview Apartment, a sprawling two-story residence nestled in Chennai.

Charged with uniting two distinct floors into one cohesive home for a family of four, Farah undertook a creative journey to weave personal stories into every corner. The outcome is a home that beautifully harmonises individuality and togetherness, offering a deeply personal living experience. Each floor, each room, and each detail speaks of intention and care, creating an immersive, layered narrative of thoughtful design.

The journey begins at the foyer, where a sense of grandeur unfolds. Mirrored arches above a stark white credenza create an illusion of endless space while subtly amplifying the energy flowing throughout the home. This isn’t merely an entryway; it’s the opening chapter of the sumptuous design narrative. The formal living room, revealed through elegant arched doorways, is a visual delight.

Adjoining the living room is a serene balcony, a space bathed in natural light. An arched embedded wall frames this outdoor escape, adorned with a printed wallpaper that brings a touch of whimsy. A cosy wicker loveseat beckons residents to pause, breathe, and immerse themselves the lush greenery and serene river views, making this spot a retreat. Continuing through an arched doorway, the dining room exudes understated luxury. At its heart is a substantial concrete table, its textured surface a tactile masterpiece. The bold charm of the table grounds the space, adding both visual aura and a striking contrast to the surrounding softer elements.

The adjacent puja room is a spiritual oasis, introduced by awe-inspiring brass doors inspired by the Dasavatara. Each panel, crafted with cut-outs, etching, and ovalling techniques, narrates the story of Vishnu’s ten avatars. Inside, soft lighting by Clove imbues the space with serene energy, inviting contemplation and connection. This bedroom merges simplicity with warmth. The sage green tones of the nightstands and dressing area bring a soothing vibe, complemented by a natural rattan wardrobe. The black-painted door adds a modern contrast, while pendant lights create a cosy glow.

Ascending to the second floor, the tone shifts from formal to familial. The space transitions seamlessly into the family room, the vibrant heart of the home. Plush brown leather recliners and a curved, modular sofa offer seating for movie marathons projected onto the wall. A drum set tucked into the corner hints at the family’s musical inclinations, while a floral carpet adds softness underfoot. This is a room designed for connection, creativity, and relaxation.

On the other side of the family room, the game room bursts with playful energy. A rainbow-coloured spiked table takes centre stage, surrounded by plush pink high chairs. Overhead, a chandelier goes across the ceiling with colourful glass orbs, creating a sense of movement. A whimsical monkey sculpture and a geometric console add a touch of humour. The bay window, transformed into a reading nook with vibrant cushions, becomes a sunlit retreat, perfect for moments of quiet or shared stories.

The daughter’s room is an explosion of creativity and colour. The powder blue circular bed anchors the room, while the doodled walls and black-and-white patterned tiles add a graphic element. The tropical patterns on the bathroom door and iridescent mosaic tiles inside continue the playful theme, making this room a haven for artistic exploration. The son’s bedroom is a young palaeontologist’s dream. Dinosaur motifs, bold colours, and functional elements like Lego shutters infuse the room with energy. A bunk bed-inspired play area transforms the space into an adventurous jungle gym, encouraging both play and rest. This room embodies a spirit of curiosity and wonder.

The master bedroom is a refuge of calm, defined by neutral tones and clean lines. A luxurious walk-in closet provides ample storage, while a fabric door, depicting running horses, becomes an unexpected piece of art. Soft lighting enhances the serene ambience, creating a perfect retreat for rest and rejuvenation.
