In the face of rapid changes in real estate living, it is imperative for interior designers and interior architects to address the sustainability issue. Though sustainability was not the priority before the color and finish materials, the interior design sector should be at the forefront to connect the residents with the bigger, global issue to what’s around them. Interior architects and interior designers hold advantage to create an immediate surrounding for apartment residents. The surrounding could be beautiful yet connected to the sustainability issue. “Astro Amenities” is a bold design statement that excludes the quantified carbon footprint offset. Rather, it reframes the use and demands of amenity designs as a holistic approach to offset carbon footprints. Most crucially, “Astro Amenities” integrates interior design and sustainable design together.
Project Name: Astro Amenities Re-thinking Sustainable Future
Studio Name: Min Jin Kook

“Astro Amenities” is an audacious design solution for a sustainable future. The apartment works like a fully functional, autonomous body. It has everything that a resident needs. Socializing, working, cooking, lounging and more are just a step outside of the residents’ doors. Amenities in the “Astro Amenities” project include; wine bars, gaming lounge, sunset lounge, beauty spa and galleries. By bringing all that a resident needs under one roof, the designer seeks to eliminate carbon emissions generated by traveling.
Through this design proposal, the designer finds a way to celebrate the urban lifestyle, while connecting back to the global, larger-than-life issue. “Astro Amenities” works like a constellation of stars that are interconnected, creating a closed-loop community of fully functioning programs. A fully autonomous building project is convenient, easy, and relaxing to people. Unlike a “sprawl”, the compact use of square footage excites, and grows the community within. The compact use of spaces also meets the current demand of the real estate market- creating more for less.

The designer proposes three main amenity programs. The largest room, a sunset lounge encapsulates the intense colorways of a sunset. The contrast of shadows and light are reflected on the deep, earthy stone finishes around the room. Cozy niches encourage intimate social moments, from a group of two to five to gather and enjoy the view. This elevated quality room delivers a dramatic atmosphere.
The next program, the beauty spa creates visually striking neon moments. Fixtures and finishes fill up the confined space, yet the room feels so infinitely immersive like walking through the cosmic dust. The special LED architectural light, the pink color serves as a background for the ever-shifting LED light colors. The use of pink grout ties the design together, looping back to the attention to the detail that interior designers crave.
The last program, billiards bar is a dark, soothing space with visually striking colorways. The dark, textured millwork provides a comfortable, relaxing atmosphere. The bluestone flooring creates movement within the space. Lights in the ceiling create a glistening effect, creating a spectacular “edge” every time a person walks into a room. The brass trims dazzle and frame the room.

Each room’s design is versatile, yet visually striking to accommodate any age group in the apartment. By bringing everything you need, the residents don’t even have to actively participate in solving sustainability issues. All they need to do is a “passive” participation, by using and enjoying the amenities that are offered to them.
Through this proposal, the designer hopes to inspire interior designers and interior architects; to be the visionaries; and to stand at the forefront of sustainability design. The power of good design stands where the good aesthetic and daring design narrative intersect. Creating a lifestyle everyone dreams of is a profound design ethos which can further cultivate many more exceptional, purposeful, aesthetically pleasing designs. The designer hopes to integrate sustainability design, interior design and real estate industry together through her proposal. “Astro Amenities” brings bright, celestial experiences – to re-thinking the sustainable future.
