As World War I ended in the autumn of 1918, Cluj emerged as a hub of revolutionary activity under Amos Frâncu. Frâncu called for the formation of the “unity of all Romanians” on October 28, 1918. To attend the declaration of Transylvania‘s merger with the Kingdom of Romania in Alba-Iulia on December 1, 1918, 39 delegates from Cluj were chosen; the Treaty of Trianon finalized the transfer of sovereignty in June 1920. To emphasize Matthias Corvinus’s Romanian paternal ancestry, a plaque written by historian Nicolae Iorga was placed on his statue in 1932. Construction of an imposing Orthodox cathedral also started in a city where only about a tenth of the population belonged to the Orthodox state church. These actions were part of the new authorities’ “Romanianization” campaign during the interwar years.
