Around 1850, immigrants started arriving in the Peters colony region; nevertheless, it wasn’t until 1874 that a town was established. Embree, named for the doctor K. H. Embree, and Duck Creek, named after the nearby creek of the same name, grew up nearby as the region grew around the Santa Fe Railroad depot, and a rivalry developed between the two communities. Dallas County Judge Thomas A. Nash eventually requested Congressman Joe Abbott to relocate the post office between the two towns to resolve a dispute over which town should have the local post office. In 1887, the relocation was finished. Garland, after U.S. Attorney General Augustus Hill Garland, is the name of the new location.
