Among the innovations coming up every other day for effective urban planning, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios got its New Lumina Village model approved. Trafford Council’s planning committee gave a green signal to this redevelopment project on the former Kellogg’s site in Stretford, Manchester, United Kingdom. It is part of the 120-acre Trafford Civic quarter master-plan. The design aims to improve the interaction and function of the community along with residence and workplaces in the area. The design proposal was submitted in February 2020 and approved in October. A public consultation event would be organized where the locals could see the plans and documents, and then give their feedback.
New Lumina Village would include residential facilities for about 750 homes, 200,000 square feet of space for local businesses and office spaces, a school, a hotel, a bar, a park, a public realm, and a center to generate the energy required for these. The site is spread around the University Academy 92 building and has a cricket ground opposite to it. This design combines all these amenities with a green environment, which would be car-free. Apart from this, 15% of the houses would be designated affordable options. This image shows the safety for children to play and the ease of keeping track of their location for parents.
To make the architecture more relatable, the architects picked up local techniques and wove them into a contemporary approach. The design pays much attention to materiality, details, and craft to make the neighborhood seem more long-living and permanent. The involvement of locals in the process will help them shape a better and futuristic community.
The project is influenced by local architecture and connects with the existing landmarks. The site has a university, a cricket ground, and a ‘Processional route’ running through it, and the design incorporates that well. The project is a venture under the partnership of the Trafford council with Bruntwood Works. Avison Young and Planit IE were other people included for planning support and landscape designing.
The neighborhood would be green and a safe zone to engage residents and users in the community and would be much more than a housing facility for the local people, says Ernst ter Horst, an associate at FCB Studios. Andrea George, regional director of town centers at Bruntwood Works says that this future-proof model will have the highest standard of residence, education, and other amenities. This design offers a great potential of giving a modern face to this site with a very interesting history. This image shows how the parts of the neighborhood don’t intimidate the other elements and the ease with which people can move around the space.
Leader of the Trafford council, Andrew Western thinks that this would be a great project to establish a new neighborhood with the best possible facilities and infrastructure, which would fulfill the demands, as well as would be a transforming response to the iconic former Kellogg’s site. He says the project would bring up thousands of job opportunities.
The project will cater to the needs of everyone including a modern resident, a worker, a retailer, and a student. The place which seemed to be an island among Manchester City will now become the heart of Trafford.
