The Polovtsians raided Kursk, the capital of a small principality, in the 12th and 13th centuries. The Mongols destroyed the city under Batu Khan in about 1237, and it was not rebuilt until 1283. Grand Duchy of Lithuania reigned over it from 1360 to 1508. In 1508, Kursk became a province along the southern boundary of the centralised Russian state. However, the city reappeared in a new location a century later; the new location for Kursk was established in 1586. A second stronghold was constructed in 1596; by 1616, it was manned by more than 1,300 troops. The Crimean Khanate, the Nogai horde, and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth troops all attempted to capture Kursk at the beginning of the 17th century, but they were never successful.
