Located in a leafy street in North Toronto, the form and materiality of the home responds directly to its semi-suburban environment by presenting a contemporary interpretation of the hip-roof typology.

The design centres on an asymmetric and gently sloping expanse of roof planes that both complement and challenge the status quo of the neighbourhood character. The apex of the upper volume is offset toward the west, positioning it adjacent to the larger of its neighbouring houses, and the roof is sliced with a wraparound skylight. The combined effect respects the scale of its context while presenting a modern façade.

Minimal, yet bold, this hip-roof typology translates in the interior as a dramatically sloped ceiling of multi-faceted planes. A large skylight at the apex, placed above the central staircase, filters light throughout the home while customized windows – that fold around walls and onto the roof – emphasize a continuity of planes.
