In the everyday life of an Architect, he/she faces various challenges from satisfying the client’s requirement until meeting the standards of the building. Every architect learns to design irrespective of the category from the time of college. But, the practical world of construction relies on various other aspects including design as an integral part. A design can only be successful when it meets the functional purpose of it. It can only be achieved when proper services are applied to the design. It has a balanced role to play in the field of architecture. Learning about architecture begins at the age of school and it is never-ending. The technical part begins in college as it is the core subject and requires some practice to be understood.

Services play an important role in deciding the functional aspect of any building. It starts from the initial stages of design. Both the requirements and services need to be solved hand-in-hand. The quality of a building is decided by how functional the services are designed in it. Learning to solve services involves various techniques, it not only depends on the professor who teaches, but it relies on the interest of the students who are eager to learn and solve issues.

Services either simple or complex have a great impact on the functionality of the building.

The above illustration exhibits how a roof overhang and a tree can influence summer sun and warming winter rays. It is very simple and yet has a stronger impact on the internal weather condition of a building. These are very practical applications of services. The technical ones require proper application and installation of these services in buildings.

There are several standards and building codes for each building based on their structure and function that has to be followed before applying.

Generally building services refers to all the factors that make building a functional one both technically and aesthetically. It can be categorized into three types.

Above mentioned categories are the building services that are applied and installed in every building for better functioning. These services with the proper design of the installation, laying of the network, decide the architecture of a building. They have to be maintained and replaced at regular intervals for better results. For undergoing such operations, the system of installation has to be simple such that it does not disturb the building as well as the inhabitants in it. This is only achieved by designing and planning a proper space for their installation and required space for them to be accessed both on a small scale and urban level.

Incorporating services in design:

Usually, the application of services is tedious when the scale of the building is huge. For instance, a Five-star hotel, a multiplex building, community housing, hospitals, etc., These large-scaled buildings involve large number inhabitants which makes the installation of services a complex one.

Services can be incorporated in design while deciding the location of major amenities in their conceptual stage. It can be developed further depending on the detailed requirements given. Application and installation of services require detailed study to provide better space and design for them.

Mechanical system:

The mechanical system of services has to be manually installed in a building, these are the essential and most important services of the building which decides the functionality of it. Even a small mistake in the installation can create a huge impact.

Building operation system:

This specific type of service is essential for industrial buildings, where transportation plays a vital role in overall infrastructure. The major role is to specify the daily route of transport and manage the traffic at peak hours. Processing and automation also follow the same principles. The entire function of the building depends on the main core machine which carries out the function from the initial stage to the final one. Though the commands are assigned manually, the entire function is carried out by the building operating system.

In current times, we tend to spend most of our time indoors. Under such circumstances, electricity is one of the important factors that help to run the routine without any difficulties. Projects ranging from a small residence to a multistory building, the planning of the electrical system needs to be solved accordingly, such that it is both saved and utilized properly.

By knowing the exact amount of light needed in a space and selecting the right option of the electrical appliance will make the building more efficient and sustainable to use.

Referring to Building codes:

One of the oldest and best ways to learn about the installation of building services is to refer to the National building code, which almost has all the standards and design requirements for the services that need to be added in a building. It has separate standard codes for each category of buildings, which eases the process of finding and solving the services. There are various other researches and standards which can be referred to while designing a new space that is not mentioned in the national building code.
