The floating tea house is situated in ShiQiao garden, Yangzhou, China designed by the architect Sun Wei of HWCD on an area of 400 sq.m. The design exemplifies the perfect synthesis of Chinese culture and architecture traditions with modern design and harmoniously blends with nature. The bamboo creates an interesting interplay of horizontal and vertical lines, providing a sense of unity and authenticity to the structure with a hierarchy of experience through visual transformation produced by the bamboo façade.

The teahouse is designed with an unassuming setting to bring appreciation for the Chinese tea through layers of experience through space to understand the lengthy process that produce a cup of tea.The building is constructed using bamboo and bricks, to blend energy efficiency and sustainability well in the design. The design follows the sustainable principles using local materials and technology through the amalgamation of the physical and natural environment with cultural, social, and mystical values offering rational solutions to the harsh climate.
The structure of the bamboo courtyard teahouse is composed of brick cubes that are enveloped by bamboo poles to form bamboo screens that serve as walls, dividers, and shading devices encouraging natural ventilation. The tall rows of bamboos are organized asymmetrically to form corridors, allowing for the building skin to change and morph as one move through space.
The bamboo courtyard tea house is conceived on a basic square footprint, create using fragments, the form is fragmented into small spaces creating a variety of solids and voids leading to an internal courtyard. The negative spaces make ventilation possible throughout and provide each space with views into the surrounding lake and the internal courtyard.
The semi-transparent cages of bamboo and bricks serve as a transitional space between the fully enclosed volumes and the open-air courtyards. As the sun moves across the sky, the frame casts an ever-changing with variation in the temporal environment. The void allows improved natural ventilation, the bamboo screen serves as a shading device in the summer and the thick brick wall retains heat in the winter, reducing the need for mechanical heating and cooling.
