The capital city of the Canadian Province of Ontario, Toronto is the most populous city in Canada. The city is home to some of the most neck cranking skyscrapers and highrise buildings, including the CN Tower which was the tallest free-standing building in the Toronto.
1. First Canadian Place | Tallest buildings in Toronto
Sited in the Financial District of Toronto, serving as the global operational headquarters of the Bank of Montreal, is Canada’s tallest building, First Canadian Place. At 298m (978ft), this building owned by Brookfield Office Properties became the third tallest free-standing structure in Canada when its construction was completed in 1975.
This white Carrara marble cladding structure, designed by B+H Architects, is one of only a few buildings in the world that uses the double decked variety and has links to the underground PATH system.
2. St. Regis Toronto
In between Scotia Plaza and The National Club, built on a formerly vacant lot used only for parking, this 2012 completed building went on to become the second tallest building in Toronto. The 65-storeyed project, at a zenith of 276.9m has a total of 261 luxury hotel rooms and 118 residential condominium suites. Designed by Zeidler Partnership Architects, this building is clad with steel, glass and stone façade.
3. Scotia Plaza | Tallest buildings in Toronto
With its construction completed within a short span of three years, the WHMZ Architects designed modern tower became Canada’s third tallest skyscraper. Additionally, the tower embodies the historic Beaux-Arts Bank of Nova Scotia Building at 44 King Street West. Red Napoleon Granite, quarried in Sweden, cut and polished in Italy encloses much of the exterior surfaces. The east and west facades feature a deeply indented, stepped-chevron stretching between floors 56 and 68.
4. Aura
A part of the Residences of College Park project, Aura is also a final phase of a series of condominium buildings near College Park in Toronto’s Downtown Yonge district. With the initial design being proposed for two towers featuring a ten-storey podium, the design was brought down to a 79 storeyed residential building.
This mixed-use skyscraper became the tallest residential building in Canada and 34th tallest residential building in the world as of 2018.
5. TD Canada Trust Tower | Tallest buildings in Toronto
Featuring the globally celebrated Allen Lambert Galleria, located in the Brookfield Place is the TD Canada Trust Tower. The building has direct access to Union Station and the PATH. Designed by B+H Architects and Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, the tower became renowned for their recessed design and spires on the elevated levels.
6. One Bloor
At the intersection of Bloor Street and Yonge Street in downtown, lies the mixed-used skyscraper One Bloor. Initially named as One Bloor East and Number One Bloor it was the 10th tallest residential building out of Asia and 40th tallest residential building in the world as of 2018.
The Hariri Pontarini Architects designed masterpiece has 76 floors along with resort-inspired amenities on the sixth and seventh floors designed by Cecconi Simone.
7. Commerce Court West
Located on King and Bay Streets, is the office building complex of Commerce Court. The Complex is made up of four structures and a central courtyard with the Commerce Court West being the tallest amongst the four. It is 57 storeyed and has a height of 287m (942 ft.)
8. Harbour Plaza Residences East
Harbour Plaza Residences East is one of the two towers of Harbour Plaza, sited in the South Core district. It is 67 storeyed with a height of 237m. The two residential towers of Harbour Plaza are the tallest twin buildings in Canada.
9. ICE East
The 67 storeyed ICE II Condominiums at York Centre is the ninth tallest building in Toronto having a height of 234m (768 ft.). Lauded for its uncanny Scandinavian design, featuring a unique canopy with an extensive roof, the project won the Emporis Skyscraper Award in the year 2016.
10. Sky Tower Eau du Soleil | Tallest buildings in Toronto
Designed by Zeidler Partnership and Richmond Architects this 2019 completed project is best known for its kenspeckle podium and scenic lakefront parks. The towers of Eau du Soleil are 66 and 49 storeyed. With a height of 228m (748 ft.), Sky Tower du Soleil is the tenth tallest building in Toronto.
11. Harbour Plaza Residences West
Sited in the South Core district of Toronto, Ontario is Harbour Plaza Residences. In addition to the One York Street commercial office tower, the two towers of Harbour Plaza are linked by a retail podium. The West Tower is the eleventh tallest building in Toronto with a height of 237m (778 ft.).
12. Ten York
A high rise condominium building anchored in South Core, Toronto is the 65-storeyed Ten York. The project has a height of 224m (735 ft.) and comprises 725 condo suites.
13. TD Bank Tower
With Ar. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe as design consultant to architects, John B.Parkins and Bregman+Hamann, this project was an inspiration of the former President and Chairman of the Board of the Toronto-Dominion Bank, Allen Lambert.
The building came out to be a classic example of Mies sui-generis stance on International style. The Toronto Dominion Centre is set in a vein of darkly coloured, steel and glass structure having a height of 223m.
14. Bay Adelaide Centre West Tower
With a height of 218m (715 ft.), Bay Adelaide Centre West Tower went on to become the fourteenth tallest building in Toronto with its completion in the year 2009. The first of the three towers to be completed under the Bay Adelaide Centre; the West tower was followed by the Bay Adelaide East and finally Bay Adelaide North.
It was the last of a series of construction projects in Downtown launched in the golden years of the 1980s, and was to have cost almost a billion dollars.
15. Shangri la Hotel | Tallest buildings in Toronto
Emerging high above the urban sprawl, far off from the enigma of the city centre, lies the Shangri-La Hotel. For the creation of their eight-level below-grade parking garage, at 31m(102 ft.), the hotel became the second-deepest excavation for a building in Canada’s history.
Their rooms muffled up in traditional Asian decor with floor-to-ceiling windows unfold and blend into the downtown city seamlessly. The hotel became the 15th tallest building in Toronto at a height of 215m.
