São Leopoldo is an industrial city located in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul of Brazil. It lies near the Sinos river and is a part of the greater Porto Alegre metropolitan area. It was the first German colony established in 1824 in southern Brazil. It is an industrial centre for leather manufacturing, arms and ammunition and aluminium ware. The city is connected to major cities of São Paulo through highways and riverboats.
