Philippe Starck is a French industrial architect cum designer, famous for his wide range of designs. He was born in Paris, on the 18th of January, 1949, and is the son of Andre Starck, an aeronautical engineer. His family hailed from the Alsace region before his grandfather moved to Paris. He was inspired by his father and loved to dismantle and then rebuild again (but differently) toys and things from an early age. He studied product design at the École Camondo in Paris. He set up his first company in 1968 which made inflatable objects.

Philippe Starck believed in building for the masses rather than for a select few. He has an impressive range of over 10,000 patent designs to his credit. Designing everything from; buildings, sailing yachts, motorcycle, and other vehicles; from chairs, watches, tables, tableware, televisions, radios, table lamps, paper towels, luggage, bath accessories, to stationeries and books; from international hotels to waste management center in Paris to the interior of an International space station’s housing module, to be used for space tourism, etc., He believes in low cost but good looking designs. Many of his creations are seen in American and European Museums.

Each day, many people sit on those chairs, which then changes shape over a period of time and sometimes become weird. “GENERIC.C is the functional structure, the generic version, which goes towards the essence of this type of furniture.” Phillipe Starck.

He said, “For years I kept looking for a good chest of drawers and a good night table for myself. I could never find them. To console myself, I did an evocation of one and called up the spirit of all those chests of drawers that may have existed and that I never ran across. Something minimum, an invisibility which is nevertheless, very necessary in our humble daily life.”

7. A.I. Chair for Kartell | Philippe Starck

Generative design software allows designers and engineers to put in their design goals, along with factors such as materials, manufacturing techniques, and cost controls. The software then searches for all the possible alternatives of a solution, quickly producing design options. It checks and learns from each reiteration what works and what does not.

The A.I. project and alliance between Starck, Kartell, and Autodesk is at the peak of the industrial design world, bringing out the most ingenious products ever, with generative design. This venture was also the first time that injection molding was chosen as a manufacturing limit in Autodesk generative design technology.
