On an unusually shaped lot with a small grove of Oak trees to avoid, this Modern house is comprised of several repetitive curved metal roof masses of varying heights aligned in an axial composition. Possessing a fine modern art, furniture, and photography collection, the house was designed to display these items in daily life. Additionally, the large Game Room, Bar, Screening Room, Pool, Basketball 1/2 Court and Batting Cage provide for varied youthful and adult entertaining at home. Simple birch cabinetry, wood and flamed granite countertop Selfs, stainless steel countertops, and hidden ambient lighting enhance the inherent beauty of simple materials.

James Coane

Since 1994 James V. Coane & Associates, Architects in Pasadena CA, has specialized in custom residences and residential estates, historic renovations and expansions, residential interiors, and corporate and retail interiors.

While primarily working in the Pasadena, San Marino, and West Los Angeles areas, their body of current and completed projects stretches to Santa Barbara, Montecito, Newport Beach, San Diego, Malibu, Aspen, Beijing, and Taiwan. Honored with an American Institute of Architects award and “Best Architect in Pasadena” for several years by the Pasadena Weekly, their projects have been in the books European Neo-Classicism Style and French Style as well as magazines such as Architectural Digest, LA Architect, The Los Angeles Times, Kitchen Trends, THE Magazine, The Hollywood Reporter, and many more. Several projects have been used as locations for television and movie filming, fashion and advertising photography, and for philanthropic fund raising events. The firm is well versed in and appreciative of historical and modern architecture and design, and is known for its attention to exterior and interior detail on every project.

Working in a relaxed and creative environment in Old Town Pasadena, James V. Coane & Associates is a team of architects, interior designers, engineers, technicians, researchers, and support staff who actively collaborate with clients, approving agencies, and contractors to ensure not just a creative and inspirational architectural and interior design, but also, support well executed construction, with complete construction observation services throughout project completion to ensure the highest quality outcome.

James Coane was born and raised in Los Angeles. He received his BA in Architecture from Cal Poly Pomona and has been a licensed architect in the State of California since 1994. Prior to starting his own firm, Mr. Coane worked for Raymond Steinberg and Associates Structural Engineers, Danny & Spunt Architects, and Robert L. Fowler Architect on a large variety of custom residential, multi-family residential, and various commercial projects.

James gained an appreciation for the beautiful indigenous modern architecture of Rudolph Schindler, Richard Neutra, and Craig Ellwood he often encountered during his teenage years of skateboarding in the empty swimming pools of the Hollywood Hills and the Santa Monica mountains.

When he later moved to Pasadena to be closer to his college, he then acquired an additional deep appreciation and inspiration from the historical architecture of Wallace Neff, Paul Williams, Reginald Johnson, and Sylvanus Marston and found these architects work, though different, just as architecturally contextual and interesting as some of his early Modern heroes.

Mr. Coane continues to work in various architectural styles.

As a lifelong Angelino, James enjoys hobbies and activities offered by the pleasant Los Angeles climate and local amenities such as surfing, bicycling, and hiking in the mountains with his Australian Shepherds.
