New Facade of Venice | Bumjin Kim

Venice is one of Italy’s top travel cities and a beautiful, romantic destination with many attractions. Venice faces some problems such as flooding, unstable land. My proposal offers people to experience what Venice is facing to in a various way. For example, changing shape as it rises and falls with the tide, this project can reminds us of natural pattern that operates the lagoon.

The project brings passive and active forms of leisure out into the lagoon by realizing and experiencing Venice. This building is not only a buffer zone between a land and water, but also a new facade of Venice.

Idea of geometry: As you see pictures above, there is difference between real profile of Venice land and new profile of Venice land by perception of Venice. If a person stands on edge of the land and look ahead to Venice, the way of perception about Venice is totally different than we expect.

Tensegrity_Buckminister Fuller: Tensional integrity is a structural principle based on the use of isolated components in compression inside a net of continuous tension, in such a way that the compressed members do not touch each other and the pre-stressed tensioned members delineate the system spatially. The term tensegrity was coined by Buckminster Fuller as a contraction of tensional integrity. This structure will only fail if the rods buckles which means there is no bending moments. It allows to be called as a rigid structure.

Structure_Detail: Within the tensegrity structure, interior space is holding by each column of tensegrity. Steel cables, aluminum poles support the interior space which is  covered by fabric.

Specific land condition in Venice: Land subsidence is probably a widespread phenomenon that may have either a natural or man-induced origin. In Venice, sea-level rise isn’t the only thing that has Venice’s famous canals rising ever-so-slightly every year: the city is also sinking.

Venice’s subsidence was recognized as a major issue decades ago and the forces causing the subsidence now are likely natural ones that have been  impacting the area for a long time, particularly plate tectonic. In order to realize and understand the situation, adopting unstableness is a new structure for this site. Tensegrity structure system which is rigid structure by itself can be a good structure system on the unstable land.
