The theme itself, an open space for the dissemination of sustainable culture and knowledge – instigates and imbues the project with a sense of responsibility. Lying in the core park of the Village of the Athletes complex for the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, this building contains temporary and permanent exhibition spaces on subjects pertaining sustainability and all environmental concerns that weighed in the building and project process of the games’ infrastructure.

Architect: Fernando Forte

Team Members: Lourenço Gimenes, Rodrigo Marcondes Ferraz

Country: Brazil

The building is situated in the middle of the park’s main lake, with its floor being one metre below the water level. This way, the building turns into a more horizontally oriented volume and the users’ perspective is modified, having water chest-high, and being able to touch it with their hands. The whole building’s envelopment is done through perforated screens and tiles that also protect the interior from rain and heavy sun.

It is the highlighted element of the park.
